2026 International Family Therapy Congress

The increasing accessibility of direct-to-consumer DNA testing has led to a rise in “surprise DNA discoveries,” where individuals uncover unexpected biological relationships, referred to as Misattributed Parentage Experiences (MPE), and consist of Non-paternal Events, Late Discovery Adoptees, or Donor Conceived Persons. 

This presentation explored therapeutic approaches for working with families affected by these discoveries. It addressed emotional and relational themes evolving from new research specific to The MPE discoveries, and provided practical strategies for clinicians, including how to manage and facilitate difficult family conversations.
